Let's cut to the chase here: Ray Nagin, major of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, has urged the rebuilding of a "chocolate New Orleans", saying that "You can't have New Orleans no other way."

After the recent mayoral vote in New Orleans, which included 22 candidates, Ray Nagin will be in a runoff election with current Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu.

Does anyone see a problem here?

Nagin did apologize for his remark about a "chocolate" New Orleans later on - I'll give him that. But so what?

If a white mayor of a destroyed city had ever dared to suggest "We need to rebuilt a white city; You can't have it any other way," his or her career would have been over. Instantly. No apologizing could possibly make up for it.

So I have to wonder - why is Mr. Nagin still in the business, let alone a serious contender for a position as mayor of a major city?

Why Won't They Legalize Medicinal Marijuana?

The FDA recently issued a statement saying that the agency opposes the use of marijuana for medical purposes:

"[There is] no sound scientific studies supported medical use of marijuana for treatment in the United States, and no animal or human data supported the safety or efficacy of marijuana for general medical use."

They make no mention of the 1999 study by the Institute of Medicine, a division of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. This study found marijuana to be "moderately well-suited" for relieving nausea from chemotherapy and helping AIDS patients to regain lost appetites.

Ten states have legalized medicinal marijuana, much to the chagrin of the federal government. In 2001 DEA agents arrested two California residents, one a patient with brain cancer, who were using marijuana for relief of their medical symptoms.

Efficacy and Safety? Right.

I seriously doubt that the issue here is about the efficacy or safety of medicinal marijuana use. How many people really believe that marijuana isn't effective in relieving symptoms of at least some medical conditions? The people who use it for the relief of symptoms seem to think that it works - and I think it safe to say that their opinion ought to have some weight in discussion of the matter.

As for safety... 1) Read the warning labels on over the counter drugs the next time you walk by a pharmacy. I'd wager that marijuana used according to a doctor's prescription would be safer than half of that stuff. I won't even bother getting started on comparing the risks of medicinal marijuana as compared to many prescription drugs and medical treatments. 2) If a person is dying of brain cancer, do the potential risks of medicinal marijuana really matter if it effectively treats that person's symptoms?

What's really going on here?

The DEA doesn't like marijuana. Alcohol? Fine. Drink until your liver fails, they don't care. Nicotine? No problem. Smoke until your lungs turn black and you suffocate. But marijuana? Well, they labeled that as one of the bad ones some time ago, and heaven forbid that we break away from tradition.

Legalizing medicinal marijuana would reduce social stigma against the drug (how much there is to begin with, I really don't know), which might, if we do some armchair speculation, lead to more people using it. And - well, like I said, it's become one of the traditional bad drugs, so we can't have that.

They're probably also worried about people managing to get medicinal marijuana for recreational use, through prescriptions from quack doctors, illegal distributions from pharmacists, etc. And they're right; if medicinal marijuana was legalized, more people probably would get marijuana in these ways.

But think about it - would you rather have recreational users getting regulated marijuana from crooked doctors and pharmacists, or would you prefer that they get it from drug dealers working for violent drug lords and street gangs?

Neil Young: Absolutely. I think he should be tried for war crimes, and convicted. We need to get him out of there.

Ms. Johnson: And how do you feel about Vice President Cheney?

Neil Young: Oh gosh, don't get me started. He's - well, I'll just say this: he's every bit as bad as Bush. Maybe worse, even, what with Halliburton. And I hear he recently shot someone while he was hunting without a license... but anyway, like I said, don't get me started on that. [laughs]

Ms. Johnson: You do realize that if the President of the United States is impeached, the next person in line for the presidency would be the current Vice President?

Neil Young recently recorded - amazingly, in a mere three days - a new protest album titled Living With War. In the album, Young takes a strong stand against the war in Iraq and on American President Bush; the album includes a song titled "Impeach the President".

Young was interviewed by Sally Johnson of American Liberalism Today, a popular online magazine. Here is an exclusive excerpt from the interview, which will be published in full sometime in the next few days:

Ms. Johnson: Mr. Young, I've been told that you have described the style of the music you recorded for Living With War as "metal folk protest". Could you tell us more about that?

Neil Young: Well it's, you know - "folk protest" harkens back to what was going on in the late 60s and 70s. What I was involved in, with [the song] "Ohio" after Kent State. Music making a strong political statement-

Ms. Johnson: And "metal"?

Neil Young: Right, that's just.. you know, it's a little heavier than what I was doing in the 70s. More appropriate to the- Ms. Johnson: So you would describe the music as "heavy metal"?

Neil Young: Uh, I mean, it's not like heavy, heavy metal. Just, you know, rock and roll.

Ms. Johnson: So why don't you call it "Rock and Roll Folk Protest"?

Neil Young: [laughs] I guess that's not as catchy.

Ms. Johnson: I'm not sure that heavy metal fans will think this is funny. When Jethro beat out Metallica for the best heavy metal album Grammy in 1989, several people were killed in riots in the Los Angeles area...

Neil Young: I, uh... what magazine did you say you work for again?

I'm told that Young walked out of the interview at this point. It took the better part of an hour for his publicist to calm him down and convince him to return to the interview. Reports indicate that he does not intend to retract his description of the new album's music as "metal".

The real internet buzz generated by the interview, however, is due to the leakage (not by me, of course...) of the following excerpt:

Do We All Worship the Same God?
some claim we do - but is it true?

"Despite our differences, we all worship the same God." It's a pleasant catch phrase we often hear from people promoting respect between (monotheistic) religions or between sects within a religion. It sounds good - the idea that people of (most) different religions simply have differing ideas about the very same God is attractive to fans of religious toleration. I'm all for religious toleration, but I also think that whatever claims we use in appeals for toleration should be true. I suspect that this one is not. Why? Let me explain.

What exactly does it mean when you say 'God' anyway? Before you say "Well duh, 'God' refers to God!", think about this:

Sometimes, names do refer directly to people or things. When I say "Hey everyone, this is my friend Michael," and Michael is standing right next to me, the name 'Michael' directly refers to Michael. But this doesn't isn't true for all names.

What can we say about a sentence like "Santa Claus lives in the North Pole"? (note: I'm not claiming that 'God' is equivalent to 'Santa Claus' here - just bear with me and you'll understand why I'm bringing this up.) Assuming there is no Santa, 'Santa' can't refer to Santa (because there is no such person). So 'Santa' has to mean something else.

Bertrand Russell claimed that names like 'Santa' are actually disguised definite descriptions. That just means that the word 'Santa' stands in for a description. What 'Santa' really means is something like "The jolly fat man with red cheeks who delivers presents on Christmas". (This is a somewhat simplified version of Russell's view, but it is good enough for my purposes here.)

But names that don't name any real person aren't the only ones that are disguised definite descriptions. In fact, most names work this way. Think about 'Napoleon'. Obviously, I've never met Napolean or had any kind of direct contact with him. So it is also true in this case that 'Napoleon' really means something like "The French general who became Emperor of the French and then was exiled," or something like that.

It is actually fairly rare for a name to refer directly to the named person themselves. It can only do this when we are in very direct contact with that person - if we see them and interact with them frequently. I've never met President Bush, so when I say 'President Bush', even that doesn't refer directly to the person. It really means something like "The current President of the United States, son of a former President with the same name," and so on.

All of these descriptions are under-specified for the sake of simplicity. To give a full account of what 'Santa' or 'Napoleon' or 'President Bush' means (for those of us who don't have regular direct interaction with any of them), you would have to specify most all of the important characteristics you associate with them. Napoleon was a particular French general; 'Napoleon' can't pick out just any French general. So the full description would include all kinds of things you know about Napoleon to make sure that the description would pick out Napoleon and no one else. Same for Santa and President Bush.

What does this have to do with God?

'God' is one of those names that is really a disguised definite description. Even if you believe that you do have some kind of direct contact with God, it isn't the same kind of direct contact that you have with a person you see and talk to every day. In most religious traditions, God is in an important sense unknowable - God is too great for finite human minds to comprehend. Because God is unknowable in this sense, God is not the kind of thing that you can directly pick out with a name; the real meaning of the word 'God' is some kind of definite description.

Different religions and different sects within religions have different ideas about God. Many agree that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omni-benevolent. But beyond that, disagreement abounds. For Christians, the full description for 'God' will include something like "...who sent his son Jesus to Earth to allow salvation for mankind". But the description of 'God' in Judaism won't include this. Neither will the descripion of 'God' in Islam (I'm not sure exactly what the Islamic view of Jesus is, but it wouldn't be exactly the same). And of course Islam's 'God' description will include something about the prophet Muhammad, and so on.

From this, it follows that 'God' does not mean the same thing for Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Because followers of these religions have different ideas about God, and because these ideas of God determine the meaning of the word 'God', the word cannot have the same meaning for followers of different religions. When a Christian says "I believe in God", it does not mean the same thing as it does when a Jew or a Muslim says "I believe in God".

It goes further than this. Because there are often significant differences even between churches within Christianity (and other monotheistic religions) regarding ideas about God, the word 'God' won't even mean the same thing when used by members of many different churches. This will depend on how detailed a church's specification of God is, of course - only details that are considered very important aspects/properties of God will count. But I think it is clear enough that there are essential differences in the way major religions understand God, so what I've said will certainly hold in this case (if not also for understandings of God between churches).

Do We All Worship the Same God? It's a trendy catch-phrase for those of us who are in favor of religious toleration - "Despite our differences, we worship the same God." The website ChristianAnswers.net has more articles on good wholesome Christian living (that's what they call it, anyway) than you can shake a stick at. They also have a section on why you shouldn't be gay.

There are a lot of issues related to homosexuality floating around. Should we legalize same-sex marriage? Should gay couples have the same rights that straight couples have? Do we need to protect homosexual rights with legislation or a Constitutional amendment?

But there's another hot issue in religious circles: Does the Bible forbid homosexual acts? There have been a number of arguments aiming to show that it does not. One argument claims that David and Johnathan were gay together:

3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. (1 Sam. 18:3)

What can you say about that?

However, David's "love" for Jonathan was not sexual (erotic) but a friendship (philic) love. And Jonathan did not strip himself of all his clothes, but only of his armor and royal robe (1 Sam. 18:4). 12 Also, a kiss was a normal greeting in that day, such as when Judas kissed Jesus. In several cultures today, men normally greet each other with a kiss, too. Further, David's love for his wives, especially Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11), clearly reveals his heterosexual orientation.

So according to ChristianAnswers.net, not only should a man not be gay, but he sure have lots of wives to prove what a manly heterosexual man he is? Ah, now I see.

Two problems:

(1): These people are going to have to demand that all Christians reject those laws and proposed Constitutional amendments defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman. The Bible clearly allows for multiple wives, perhaps even demands it!

(2): Shouldn't these people be in favor of gay marriage anyway? There are a roughly equal number of men and women in this country; if some men start hoarding multiple wives, what will the rest of them do? If they were smart, they'd promote same-sex marriage so they could pair up as many men as possible and get rid of the competition.

Skip College, Buy a Fake Diploma! fulfill your dreams of status and prestige (for cheap!) You know, education can take up a lot of time and money. Why not skip the whole college thing and get your diploma online? I'm not talking about online degree programs here; those cost too. Just get right to the good stuff and buy a fake diploma. Why it's easier to get a fake diploma: (1) Price I did a little online research and found that you can get a replica diploma on most any budget - prices range from around $35 to $1000 or more. Freedom to Criticize the Government
does the Bush administration suppress dissent?

Does the Bush administration try to suppress dissenting political opinions? I've heard this charge many times, most often in the past few years. Just the other day a prominent daytime talk show host complained that it is difficult to express views that go against those of the Bush administration.

My initial reaction when I hear this is usually something like "It's possible - but isn't it odd that you'd be out there expressing dissent if dissent is suppressed?". It's different when it's some obscure (or relatively obscure) blogger or web author (or whoever) doing it, but when I hear it in the middle of the day on a nationally televised program, I really start to wonder.

Don't take me wrong - you shouldn't consider me a Republican and/or a Bush supporter. Nor should you consider me a Democrat or as being vehemently anti-Bush. Frankly, I'm not crazy about any of it. Oh well. But not liking it doesn't mean that I'm not interested in it. So I like to look at the claims from all sides, in particular ones that strike me as potentially implausible, and especially when they become popular.

Here's something from Daily Kos (article here):

Evaluation:

No Dissent at Rallies: The site does include what seem like credible reports about people being denied entry to or being kicked out of Bush rallies because of anti-Bush shirts, buttons, etc., and the loyalty oath claim is credible.

Is this acceptable? The answer might depend on where the rallies were held. Some of them have been at public schools, and I think it is clearest in these cases that a line has been crossed. If we recognize the right of students to attend a public school and make use of its faculties, it is probably going too far when special restrictions aimed at suppressing dissent of a certain kind are put in place when a speaker (any speaker) comes. If all political shirts/buttons/etc. were banned it would be a different story - but saying it's Bush Shirt Only day at a public school is too much.

But what about rallies held in other areas? Either private areas or public areas where other organizations are allowed to hold events during which they have the authority to let in or keep out who they please? Here I'm not sure that there is a legitimate complaint. If it was your rally, don't you think that you should be able to keep out people who were against you?

Here's what Daily Kos had to say:

And if they think they can manage the message and the rally as though it were a corporate event they are wrong, wrong WRONG. A democracy is not a corporation and the president of a democracy is not the CEO of a corporation. In an election rally, the president is making his case to us, asking us to elect him. We have every right to ask him why we should send him back to office.

This seems like a weak argument. Americans have the legal right to express themselves, and they have a right to exercise their choice by who they vote for. But is the President obliged to listen to and respond to criticism? I'm not sure that he or she is; we have no legal requirements that the President or a presidential candidate take time to answer questions and challenges by those who don't agree with him/her. And in any case, the charge that Bush doesn't respond to criticism is not the same thing as the claim that his administration suppresses dissent. It might be trivially true that barring dissenters from a rally counts as suppressing dissent, but it isn't suppressing dissent in an interesting way - what is (or would be) of concern would be unreasonable or even illegal suppression. Barring political t-shirts of a certain kind (and not another) from a public school for a rally is probably unreasonable; I find it a stretch to consider it unreasonable to let only pro-Bush people in a pro-Bush rally.

A presidential candidate can put out all sorts of messages without hearing or responding to criticism: he or she can send out emails, post messages to a website, put out advertisements in the press, on the radio, and on television, and give out pre-recorded messages or speeches at press conferences. All of these can be one-way communications. No one seems to question the legitimacy of these kinds of communications. So why should a rally be any different? Why do we think it necessary that dissenters should come in and ask questions, raise challenges, etc., at a rally?

Again, it's a different criticism to simply say that a candidate isn't addressing the concerns citizens have - that's not the same as suppressing dissent. I'm not convinced that saying "Sorry, my rally is only for my supporters" counts as suppressing dissent. As far as I can tell, there's plenty of dissent being expressed. Are there other attempts to suppress it? Maybe, maybe not - I don't know. So far the case hasn't been made to me, but I'm open to discussion.

Picking right up from Part Three, here are more examples of weird things you shouldn't say when trying to pick up girls on Myspace.com or other similar networking sites (or ever, really):

(19) 'Nice Shirt.'
She knows what you're looking at. And despite what you might think, most of the time she is not putting up the picture so people can stare at them. Even if she is, chances are she didn't put the picture up for you to stare at them. And even if she did, that doesn't mean that she wants you to acknowledge the fact. It's a girl thing. Behave.

(20) 'I think I'm in love.'
No you don't; you just think she's hot. And if you were, it would mean that something is wrong with you - you haven't even met the girl.

(21) 'The only thing better would be if you had an identical twin.'
I'm still not sure what to think about this one. Maybe, maybe if you have an identical twin and this fact is obvious (if both of you are in your picture). But you probably don't, so stay away from this one.

(22) 'You look like my last girlfriend.'
Before she gained two hundred pounds, right? In seriousness though, this might be okay at some point - some point far, far in the future. If it's the first thing you say to get, she's just going to think that you have some attachment issues. Sorry, but you got dumped, and trying to pick up a similar-looking girl won't replace that empty feeling (sniff, sniff).

(23) 'So, where in ____ do you live?'
Didn't your mother tell you not to give your address to strangers? Hers did. And she's probably not in the marker for stalker at the moment.

(24) 'I'm a millionaire.'
No you're not. And you should know that she's not going to believe you - especially if the background on your profile is animated falling money. And even if by chance you actually are, then trust me - there's nothing more annoying that those obnoxious infomercial people spouting about how they made money fast and easy investing in real estate, gold, foreign currency, or anything else.

Part Two: More Beginner's Mistakes

This is Part Two of the series. See Part One Here.

Picking up where I left off. You're looking for a date on a networking site like MySpace.com. You've found the girl. You're sending a message without any unacceptable message subjects, and you're not asking her 'Yo Wazzup?', making indecent suggestions, or bragging about your sorry self.

Some more things to avoid:

Most of you probably know this by now. But unless her user name is 'hAlOlOvEr_92', she's going to think that you're a dork - in a bad way.

See above. This one is even worse.

(9) skipping punctuation and capitalization
I'm sure a lot of people would argue with me over this one - but capitalize and use proper punctuation. It's not much more effort, but little things like this tend to stand out. Whether justified or not, many people will think that you sound smarter.

(10) Mkaing a bnuch of tpyoes.
Slow down try to spell correctly. If you don't know how to spell the word, don't use it (or look it up). Again, justified or not, most people will think you sound smarter. And really, you might need that first impression.

Excellent. Now you won't sound like a complete fool because of your writing. Don't worry - you can let it slide later once you start getting to know her (if you can't stand writing correctly. Trust me; will pay off. It's nice to know that a person sending you a message isn't just trying to get it over with as quickly as possible. Extra effort counts.

Now some words to avoid:

(11) Slang, abbreviations, non-words.
I know that language is a social construction and that popular slang and abbreviations often end up in the dictionary. Well, '2' in place of 'to' probably won't ever make it. But still, err on the formal side. You don't want your message to read like a thesis, but you dont wanna make her think u r 2 lazy 2 write full words, or so off da hook dat she don't know what what you sayin. Word?

(12) The patronizing: 'honey', 'baby', etc.
She's not your baby or your honey, and if you talk to her like she is (remember, you're a stranger), she never will be. So cool it and approach her with respect or she will toss you into the Random Internet Sleazeball pile.

How Not to Pick Up a Girl
Part One: Beginner's Mistakes

Are you a single guy? Looking for a date online? There's not necessarily anything wrong with that.

Think you might find a date on a networking site like Myspace.com? Probably not impossible - you can use the browse features to find someone in your area.

You can read up on her interests - see what books she likes to read, what movies she likes, what she does for fun. Is she single? Is she interested in dating? If not, drop it.

Found someone who is single and open to dating? Good.

The hardest part comes next: the approach. What do you say to her?

I'm not here to tell you what to say. But I will give you a few examples, drawn from real life experience, of what not to say:

(1) Message subjects like 'Hey Gorgeous', 'Hi Sexy!' and the like.
Please. The very first two words out of you, and one of them is 'gorgeous', 'sexy', etc.? Way to tell her 'The primary reason that I'm sending you a message is that I'm attracted to you.' Does she care? No. Does she even open the message? Probably not.

(2) Bland messages subjects like 'Hey', 'Hi!', and the like.
At least give her a reason to read the message. Again, these are the first words from you that she's going to see. Do you want to be the guy who gets noticed, or the 50th "Hey!" of the day?

(3) Blank message subjects.
See above. You don't really think that she is going to be so intrigued by you, the stranger sending her a message, that she's going to be dying to find out what your subject-less message is about, do you?

Okay, so you've filled in the message subject without violating (1), (2), or (3). Great. Now for the message itself. Don't do this:

(4) Ask what's up. Or worse: waz up, or wazzup, or wazzup...
She doesn't know you. Why would she want to tell a complete stranger what's up? Come on - at least introduce yourself first. And then try to ask her something a little more meaningful. Do you share any hobbies or musical interests? Hey - you did actually read her profile, right?

(5) Tell her that you'd like to do something indecent to her
If she wanted to do that with a stranger, she could find one - and it wouldn't be you. Really, how many times do you think this approach actually works?

(6) Brag about yourself.
Are you really that cool? If you are, she'll notice it on her own. If you're not and you say you are, she'll know that you're lying. You might also make her think that you have narcissistic personality disorder. And boys, do you know what lies under the grandiose narcissistic facade? She does: the broken, infirm and self-loathing true self. In other words: The greater you claim to be, the more insecure and worthless she knows you really are. So drop the act.
